Atomfall Profitable at Launch, Sequel Plans Discussed

Author:Kristen Update:May 25,2025

Atomfall, the hit British survival game developed by Rebellion, has proven to be a financial success right from its launch on March 27, 2025, across PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Despite a significant portion of its 2 million player base accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass—meaning they did not purchase it outright—Rebellion announced that Atomfall became "immediately profitable" upon release.

While specific sales figures remain undisclosed, Rebellion highlighted that Atomfall marked their largest ever launch in terms of player numbers, an achievement likely boosted by Game Pass subscribers exploring the game on Xbox and PC platforms. Rebellion's CEO, Jason Kingsley, emphasized in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz that the inclusion on Game Pass did not "cannibalize" sales. Instead, it offered a "disproportionate" gain, with Microsoft ensuring a guaranteed level of income to offset any potential risks.

The strategic move to launch via Game Pass has also facilitated broader marketing and accessibility, allowing a wider audience to experience the game. This has led to positive word-of-mouth, further driving sales. Kingsley noted that satisfied Game Pass players often recommend the game to friends, some of whom then purchase it to join the conversation.

Rebellion is now exploring options for sequels or spin-offs while continuing to support Atomfall with post-launch content and DLC. The game's success has been underscored by IGN's review, which praised Atomfall as a "gripping survival-action adventure" that skillfully blends elements from Fallout and Elden Ring into a unique experience.

Although Microsoft keeps details of its business agreements confidential, it's clear that both Rebellion and Microsoft have benefited from Atomfall's popularity, particularly in attracting new subscribers to Xbox Game Pass. The last public update from Microsoft in February 2024 reported 34 million Game Pass users, indicating a robust platform for game distribution and engagement.
