Hunger - A Fresh Twist on Extraction Shooters with Zombie Mayhem

The extraction shooter genre has become oversaturated lately, but Hunger from Good Fun Corporation might just carve its own niche. During a recent preview, developers revealed their Unreal Engine 5-powered first-person action-RPG that cleverly incorporates extraction mechanics – though they're quick to point out this isn't just another shooter clone. Based on my early look (though the Early Access launch remains unannounced), Hunger shows genuine promise to stand out from the Steam crowd.

Two elements immediately grabbed my attention: the game's distinctive "Renaissance gothic" visual style (as described by director Maximilian Rea) and its jaw-dropping technical execution. The screenshots reveal a fascinating blend of early firearms and brutal melee weapons set in beautifully decayed environments. The foliage physics, lighting, and textures showcase Unreal Engine 5 at its finest – easily among the most impressive implementations I've witnessed.

Gameplay combines the accessibility of ARC Raiders with the depth of Escape From Tarkov. Players start in the Outer Ramparts, a safe hub area where you can interact with NPC vendors like Piro (the masked shopkeeper) or Louis the Stashmaster. The initial Early Access release features three expansive maps with dynamic weather conditions, each containing underground dungeons. With 50-60 hours of content leading to the Cauldron area where players choose specialized professions, there's substantial depth beyond typical extraction fare.

The game's lore unfolds through discoverable in-world items, with narrative woven into NPC interactions. Combat offers meaningful choices – silent melee approaches versus noisy firearms that attract more enemies. With 33 weapons and a progression system featuring four mastery trees, the developers have created multiple viable playstyles beyond PvP.

Hunger supports solo and duo play alongside group experiences, with session lengths designed for 30-35 minute bursts of meaningful progression. The developers confirm it won't be free-to-play (targeting a $30 base price) and notably avoids battle passes, focusing instead on fair progression and cosmetic unlocks. While still early, this project from the Hell Let Loose creators shows exciting potential to reinvent the extraction formula with its unique setting and RPG depth.
