RPG Developers Share Secrets of Crafting Immersive Fantasy Worlds

Author:Kristen Update:Jan 19,2025

An exclusive email interview with Pixel Tribe, the developers behind the upcoming Kakao Games title, Goddess Order, reveals insights into their pixel RPG development process. We spoke with Ilsun (Art Director) and Terron J. (Contents Director).

Pixel Tribe's Goddess Order: A Deep Dive into Development

Droid Gamers: What inspires the pixel sprites in Goddess Order?

Ilsun: As Art Director, I guide Goddess Order's visuals. Building on the success of Crusaders Quest, we aim for high-quality pixel art with a console-like feel. Character design draws from a vast wellspring of games and stories, focusing on conveying form and movement through pixel arrangement. Inspiration comes from everyday life, and importantly, from collaboration with the team. The core characters—Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan—evolved through discussions and shared passion. Ongoing collaboration with writers and designers ensures characters perfectly embody their narrative roles and combat functions. For instance, a character concept like "a refined noblewoman who becomes a fierce dual-blade wielder" is iteratively refined through sketches and discussions.

Droid Gamers: How do you approach world-building in a fantasy RPG?

Terron J.: World-building starts with our pixel characters. Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan established the game's core. Their inherent personalities, roles, and missions shaped the narrative. Developing these characters felt organic, revealing compelling backstories of growth and heroism. The game's focus on manual combat stems from the power these characters exude, making the scenario writing an immersive and enjoyable process.

Droid Gamers: How are combat styles and animations designed?

Terron J.: Goddess Order's turn-based combat uses three characters with link skills. Design involves defining unique roles (powerful attacks, support, etc.) and ensuring strategic team compositions. We prioritize clear character advantages and intuitive controls, adjusting as needed for optimal combat flow.

Ilsun: Visually, we emphasize impactful animations. While 2D pixel art is used, characters move three-dimensionally. We use real-world weapons to study movements for authenticity.

Terron J.: Technical optimization is crucial for smooth mobile gameplay, ensuring consistent performance even on lower-spec devices without sacrificing cutscene quality or gameplay experience.

Droid Gamers: What's next for Goddess Order?

Ilsun: Goddess Order offers a JRPG-style narrative following the Lisbeth Knights. We'll continue updating chapter and origin stories, adding activities like quests and treasure hunts. Future content will push the action combat system with refined controls. We welcome player feedback.
